Know the difference between Naturopathy and Homeopathy
Ok, I get it. The two words sound a lot alike! If you’ve Googled this before, you may be even more confused. However, this post is meant to clear up some of the confusion and to set record straight!
WHAT IS NATUROPATHY?
Practitioners referred to as Naturopaths, Naturopathic Doctors or Naturopathic Medical Doctors
Licensed Naturopathic Doctors are qualified to act as your Primary Care Physician or General Practitioner
Generally abbreviated as ND or NMD
The term “naturopathy” was created from “natura” (Latin root for birth) and “pathos” (the Greek root for suffering)
Broad spectrum word- naturopathic doctors treat all sorts of ailments
May use functional lab testing
May use herbs and other botanical medicine in the treatment
May utilize nutritional IV therapy
May prescribe homeopathy- does not, however, make them a homeopath
May use acupuncture- (if they are in a licensed state in which they are allowed to perform)
May incorporate lifestyle and nutritional counseling into treatment
May prescribe medications (depending on what state you live in)
WHAT IS HOMEOPATHY?
Practitioners referred to as Homeopath or Doctor of Homeopathic Medicine
Generally abbreviated HOMEO, DHM
Generally not qualified to be your Primary Care Physician or General Practitioner
Homeopathy is one specific treatment modality, although diet and lifestyle may be addressed as well
Each state has differing laws for practicing homeopathy, but most states require an MD, DO or ND license to diagnose and treat.
The term comes from Greek homoios (similar) and pathos (suffering)
Philosophy is based on the “Law of Similars” meaning “like cures like” when remedies are given
Homeopathic remedies (medicine) are prescribed to match the patient’s symptoms
Homeopathic remedies are administered in drops or small white round pellet form
Homeopathic remedies are diluted several times resulting in very low potencies
Classical homeopathic consultations are typically an in-depth analysis about the current state of health and recommendations are based upon that
There you have it! See, it’s not so confusing!
