7 Steps to Preparing for Dental Implants

If you are one of the millions of people who are missing one or more teeth, dental implants may be the right solution for you. Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that are surgically implanted in your jawbone to hold a replacement tooth or bridge in place.

If you’re thinking about getting dental implants, it’s important to start preparing well in advance. Here are seven steps to help you prepare for dental implants:

Step 1: Visit Your Dentist for a Consultation

The first step is to visit your dentist for a consultation. During your consultation, your dentist will evaluate your oral health and discuss your options for replacing missing teeth. If you’re missing one or more teeth, the first step is to see your dentist. He or she can determine whether dental implants are right for you and advise you on how to care for your gums and jawbone in preparation for surgery.

Step 2: Get a Dental Implant Evaluation

If you decide to move forward with dental implants, your dentist will refer you to a specialist who will perform a dental implant evaluation. This evaluation will determine whether you’re healthy enough for surgery and whether you have enough bone in your jaw to support dental implants.

To ensure that dental implants are the best option for you, your specialist may recommend X-rays or another diagnostic testing.

If you have any decayed, damaged, or lose teeth, your dentist may recommend having these teeth pulled before getting dental implants.  This will help speed the process of implanting the new tooth root and provide a healthier environment for the implant to bond with your jawbone.

Step 3: Take Good Care of Your Gums

If your gums are in generally good condition, you don’t need to do anything special before getting dental implants.  However, if you have gum disease or other conditions that could affect the placement of dental implants, your dentist may recommend treatment to prepare your gums for surgery.

Step 4: Make Changes in Your Diet

A healthy, well-balanced diet is important for your overall health.  Dental implants should not interfere with what you eat, but if you have a diet that involves eating a lot of sugary or acidic foods and drinks, it may be a good idea to cut back while you’re getting dental implants.

Step 5: Stop Smoking

You should stop smoking as soon as you can before surgery.  In addition to being bad for your overall health, smoking can interfere with the success of dental implant surgery.

Step 6: Take Your Medications

If you are taking any medications or supplements on a regular basis, don’t stop without talking to your doctor.  Some medications may interfere with bone growth, which can make it difficult for dental implants to bond with your jawbone. Your dentist may prescribe antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection during surgery. You should also begin brushing your teeth with an antibacterial mouthwash, which will help to prevent an infection after your treatment.

Step 7: Line Up Your Recovery Plan

If you have a sedentary job or do not plan on taking any time off work, discuss this with your dentist ahead of time so that he or she can recommend a recovery plan that is right for you.

If you follow these steps, it should be smooth sailing when you get implants.  The most important thing to remember is that dental implant surgery does require rest and recovery time after the procedure.  Drink plenty of fluids and take any of the medications your dentist has prescribed to help you feel better.
