Branding and marketing are two important aspects of any business, but they are not the same. Marketing is all about getting your product or service in front of as many people as possible, while branding is about creating a unique identity for your company that will resonate with customers. What is Marketing?

Marketers are responsible for anything that touches potential customers – their ideal demographic section – so they can hopefully get them excited enough about being part of your business.

Push marketing requires that you pay to advertise your product or service somewhere, hopefully getting it in front of as many people as possible. With pull marketing, on the other hand, you don’t have to spend anything – instead, customers come looking for you. An example of this would be if a family was going out for dinner and searched Google for nearby restaurants. If your restaurant had an optimized website with good SEO, their search could eventually lead them to your business’s website where they can learn a little more about what you offer and decide whether or not they want to visit.

If you were out shopping and saw two similar products, but you ultimately chose one because it had more positive associations with it in your mind, then you were brand-conscious. A good way to think about branding is by using the analogy of making your company look like a well-known person so that people will listen when they speak – so if someone came up to you and said “I’m looking for Bill,” instead of asking who Bill was and why he wanted him, you’d try to help them find Bill.

In order for a business to have a strong brand, the public has to know its name, learn more about what it represents, and quickly be able to identify with it when they see it again. In the case of clothing stores, brands might want you to think that their clothes are trendy or hip – that would give people an image in their head that makes them feel young and attractive. They also might want you to think that their clothes are expensive and exclusive – this picture will make people who can’t afford them still lust after them from afar. They might even want you to think certain items are well-made or last longer than others – now those same poor people won’t be as upset when they accidentally wash their brand-name jeans in hot water.
